Strong winter winds caused walls to collapse onto flimsy shelters housing Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than four individuals. These deaths highlights the dangerous living conditions that persist after over 24 months of intense bombardment and critical shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides No Respite from Severe Elements

While a truce has been in effect from October, aid groups state that residents do not have the sufficient housing required to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the victims, said on Tuesday that the dead include two women, a girl, and a man.

Separately, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold during the night.

"The world has allowed us to witness death in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 people of a single household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot high wall fell onto their tent in a coastal area of the city. No fewer than five others were injured in the event.

Family members on that day started clearing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of Palestinians reside in improvised tents because their homes were reduced to ruins during the war. Aid groups contend not enough building supplies are entering Gaza under the truce.

Casualty Figures After the Ceasefire

Local health authorities, part of the administration, says over 440 individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals since the truce began. The ministry keeps comprehensive casualty data that are considered generally reliable by international bodies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, stated on that day that at least 100 children under the age of 18 – 60 males and forty females – had been killed after the truce began due to armed actions, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, artillery fire and employment of live ammunition. Those figures, he explained, reflected cases where enough information had been compiled to warrant documentation, but the total toll is expected to be higher. He added that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not stopped," Elder told journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "So what the world now terms calm would be considered a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Third Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million individuals has been fighting to keep the cold weather and storms at bay while facing lack of assistance and a absence of sturdier temporary housing, which is urgently required throughout the winter months. It’s the third winter since the conflict involving the state and the group started on 7 October 2023, when militants attacked Israeli territory and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports over seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
