A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
