The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose distinctive voice played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. The artist passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his life’s path. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and positive temperament earned him a vast and loyal following.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972’s crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.

He was among the select few of musicians, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
