The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
