Slot Maintains He Feels Secure and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's natural for concerns to be asked about his future following another heavy loss against the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their ninth defeat in 12 matches, marking the team's worst streak after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I've received plenty of support from above,” the coach stated.
“It would be great to reverse this trend and secure a win obviously but if you are coaching a team and not doing well then it's typical that people question you.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my role. This isn't the initial instance I’ve been in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Conversations with The Board
Upon being questioned to expand on his discussions with the team officials, the head coach explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me all the time each day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “In the normal conversations we have I feel the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so we'll see.”
Familiar Problems and Player Response
Slot lamented recurring weaknesses from his squad in their European loss, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones stated.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past feeling anger internally. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He added, “It's difficult because I play for the side I follow. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team experiencing a spell like this with outcomes like these.”
Jones stated, “But we continue to wear that badge on our shirts. And as long as that badge is taken away, we will always compete.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to where it needs to be, prove again what this club is about and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
