Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Steady Oil Shipments to India in Defiance of US Sanctions
Amid a defiant message to the West, President Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “unbroken” shipments of energy resources to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in Delhi and asserted their relationship were “resilient to foreign coercion.”
A Statement Aimed at the United States
The statement, made on Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at western countries, who have repeatedly attempted to compel New Delhi into scaling back its historical links with Moscow. This comes is in response to recent US actions, including additional trade penalties against Indian goods over its buying of Russian oil.
“Russia is a dependable supplier of oil and gas and everything required for the advancement of India’s economy,” the Russian president said. “Moscow stands willing to persist in securing the steady flow of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”
Prime Minister Modi, while not mentioning oil directly, reinforced the focus by noting that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and important foundation of the Indo-Russian cooperation.”
Questioning Washington's Stance
Before the summit, during a media interview, Putin had criticized US interference regarding India's oil imports. Putin stated, “If the US has the right to buy our uranium, how can you deny India enjoy the identical right?”
This trip was his initial trip to India after the onset of the situation in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a deliberate effort to display that the bond between the two leaders was undisturbed.
An Unusual Greeting
Taking an unusual gesture, Prime Minister Modi met Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace like close allies before having a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.
Modi referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and said it was “built on shared respect and deep trust.”
Reaffirming Bilateral Ties
Friday's talks resulted in several key agreements in the fields of defence and financial collaboration. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which targets to boost commerce to a hundred billion USD annually by the target year.
Furthermore vowed to reshape their military partnership. Even as Russia is still India's largest exporter of arms, the volume has declined in recent years as India works to widen its procurement.
Their communique highlighted plans for the collaborative manufacturing of sophisticated military systems, even if specific mention of deals for the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.
In conclusion, both nations reiterated that during the “current complex, difficult, and uncertain global landscape, Russian-Indian ties stay resilient to external pressure.”
