Madeleine McCann's Parent Urges Stricter Press Oversight Following Recollections of Media "Hounding".

Gerry McCann, father to Madeleine McCann has urged for increased scrutiny of the UK media, describing how being "monstered" by the press made him feel that he was being "overwhelmed".

A Family Subjected to Press "Abuses"

According to Gerry McCann, his family was subjected to press "excesses" and that the media had "repeatedly interfered with" the investigation into his daughter's disappearance in 2007.

He stated that the media attention exacted a "heavy burden" on his family. "We faced sustained interest and misleading headlines for 15 months or more that forced us to take legal action to stop it," he reportedly said.

"We were fortunate. We got through it. We received incredible backing. But I can promise you, there were times where I felt like I was drowning, and it was the media, mainly, not the situation we were in," he recounted.

An Appeal for Revive Leveson Inquiry

McCann and his wife, Kate, are among more than 30 people who have put their names to a letter urging ministers to reopen the second phase of the Leveson inquiry, which was set up to look into the relationship between the media and the police.

McCann said it was unacceptable that more than a year on, press regulation was "off the agenda". He described how his family had been victims of "monstering" by parts of the media and that the press was "posted" outside his home for months after the disappearance.

Describing the Intrusion

Describing the intrusion, he said: "Reporters arriving at our home, cameras being shoved their cameras against our car window, when we had our toddler twins in the back who were scared, and how upsetting that is for you as a parent."

"It's the misleading narratives. It's the fabrication of stories to suit a narrative, rather than the truth, which ruins lives," he emphasized.

The Need for Tougher Oversight and Redress

He stated these actions showed why there needed to be stricter press regulation. "At night, as we prepared for bed, we'd put on the news, and there'd be splash stories about ourselves and unverified claims," he described.

"That feeling is overwhelming, and you can see how people are broken by it and think they can't get out of it. It's so damaging, and we need that protection. People deserve recourse. And at the minute, for most of the large media outlets, there is little accountability," he asserted.

Official Response and Evolving Media Landscape

A government minister commented that a follow-up part of the inquiry had been rejected and that the news environment was now drastically altered.

"We share the view that the context has evolved profoundly since the Leveson's second phase was recommended: the public is now more likely to get their news from the internet, which has presented new and different challenges," the minister said.

The minister further stated that weighing the needs of those affected with the principle of press freedom was a "challenging task to get right," but recognized that "action is needed in this area".

An Enduring Hope for Closure

The child went missing from a family vacation apartment in 2007 when she was three years old. It was stated that it was "deeply disturbing" how the press had frequently obstructed with the investigation.

"Confidential details which should have been confidential... So if you were the perpetrator, you knew much more than you should have done," he noted.

Regarding the ongoing search, he said the hope he would find his daughter was "small but still alive". "Our wish is to find her alive, but we need to discover the truth and hold the perpetrator, and people are at risk while whoever is responsible is free," he stated.
