Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images were from relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
