Ethiopia Takes Back Cultural Items After a Century Holding in German Hands
A total of Twelve cultural objects have been formally restored to the Ethiopian nation following remaining by a household from Germany for over 100 years.
The items, initially gathered in the early twentieth century by the German then-envoy to Ethiopia Franz Weiss and his spouse Hedwig, were delivered on Wednesday to the research center at the capital's university.
The set featured crowns, shields and paintings, all regarded as historically valuable in Ethiopia.
"The artefacts continue to serve as a mark of the enduring and friendly connection between Germany and the Ethiopian people," remarked the German diplomat, Germany's envoy to Ethiopia.
Dr. Ramon Wyss, whose father was delivered during the family's assignment in the nation, handed over the items at a gathering witnessed by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He stated that the household's intention to give back the items was to "display their appeal with the public and maintain the heritage and past connected to my father's birth."
These artefacts were either considered gifts or acquisitions, according to the family.
"I would like to thank Professor Weiss's relatives for practically expressing their sincere love for the nation by carefully maintaining these artifacts and importantly ensuring their return to their proper country," commented the official.
She continued that the pieces would shortly be made accessible to the people for research and educational purposes, terming the move a milestone in safeguarding the nation's national treasures.
"Initiatives will continue to repatriate historical objects that are found in the possession of collectors and entities around the globe," she said.
In the era of colonialism in Africa, many of historical objects were taken.
This call by the continent's states for the return of taken artefacts has been responded to by a degree of progress in lately - even if a number of objects are just on short-term display.
In the year 2022, Germany was the first country to return a selection of the famous Benin artifacts to the West African nation in a bid to address its "complex past."
