Chicago's MLB Team Sign Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Major Two-Year Contract.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The contract includes a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with compensation of sixteen million for the next season and $17 million for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for finishing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for being named the top rookie honor.

The agreement includes that he will not be optioned to the minors without his permission and makes him a unrestricted player at the end of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Compensation and Franchise History

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever player from Japan to play for the White Sox, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, enters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the AL Central but representing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, eclipsing the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with recording 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing double that drove in teammates for a thrilling 6-5 win. The next night in the championship game against the United States, he blasted a game-tying home run in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is scheduled to be unveiled at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
