Bluefin Fish Commands Historic Sum of $3.2m at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A massive Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.
The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which runs locations throughout Japan and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna signals fortune," remarked the entrepreneur, a regular bidder at the annual first sale.
Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "astonished at the amount," adding, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed in no time."
This latest purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to surpass his own record another time.
A Tradition of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which announced the fish would be available at its restaurants throughout the country.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was quickly sliced up for customers at the winner's sushi restaurants soon after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've begun the year in a positive way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," said one elated customer.
