‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s road from gurney to goals with Athletic

Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in England, an teenage playing for the reserve team against German opponents at the English ground in the 2015 season, he hit the target. On his next visit he played in England, against the English side following that, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens not long later, indeed, he scored again. As he revisited to Manchester to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he scored again. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he says, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Thus the club did their duty: he was replaced.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker says, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I was without a signed agreement, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the usual talk. It’s unclear the validity, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At Lezama, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; post-session, the brief trip to the airport and another flight to Britain, now to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for Athletic, partially owing to the pressures of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary flanked by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he says.

Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player his father and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, dropped, a relegation and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to experience the peak of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the first team but each step you go through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and my knee gave way.

“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a turning point because it shifted the perspective. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it aids growth. You develop habits you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, all resources are available, so do everything. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All the minor details: do them.

“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”

Game time is essential. The striker moved emotionally in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he netted three goals in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, work, believe, and if one day a vacancy arises where you play, recall is possible. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after last year which, sometimes, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
